About Amit Ambalal
Ambalal was born in Ahmedabad in 1943. Although he initially pursued a career in the family textile business, he had a keen interest in art since his early days. Despite studying commerce and later law, his passion for art persisted. In the 1970s, he quit his life as a businessman and began taking art lessons from Chhaganlal Jadav, an artist, which ultimately led him to join the contemporary art movement in India.
Ambalal's paintings are not just about what meets the eye, but they offer a window into his inner world, where he contemplates life's bigger questions. His intention is to create art that can evoke a sense of joy and positivity in the viewer, and at the same time, provide an opportunity for introspection.
Ambalal finds his inspiration in the sights and sounds of his hometown, Ahmedabad, as well as the colorful traditions and customs of Gujarat. His works are characterized by their bright, bold colors, use of humor, intricate details and a playful use of form and composition.
What makes Ambalal's art particularly intriguing are the quirks that he brings to his paintings. He often adds a humorous touch to his works, infusing them with a sense of joy and light-heartedness. His figures are often depicted with exaggerated features, lending them a sense of playfulness.
Parallel to these his contemporary art exploration, Ambalal also collects Pichwai art and has authored a book called ‘Shringara of Shrinathji’, the book details the different representations of Shrinathji in the Pushtimarg tradition (Nathdwara School)
