About Surya Prakash
Surya Prakash was born in 1940 in Madhira, a town located in the Khammam district of Telangana. After completing his schooling, he pursued art at the Government College of Fine Arts & Architecture in Hyderabad. He was later awarded a scholarship by the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Academy, which enabled him to work under the guidance of renowned artist Ram Kumar in Delhi.
The natural world is Surya's greatest source of inspiration, and he draws upon its beauty in his works. His use of vibrant colors and intricate details are a reflection of the diverse and complex beauty of nature. Surya Prakash had a unique style which he called "abstract realism". Unlike many artists of his time, he did not give much importance to human figures in his paintings. He drew inspiration from various artists like Kandinsky, Pollock, and Ram Kumar, among others. This approach was in contrast to the figurative works that were popular among South Indian artists during that period.
Surya Prakash's artistic vision is not only about creating beautiful paintings, but also about encouraging his viewers to contemplate their own connection with the world around them. His art is an invitation to experience the beauty and wonder of nature and to reflect on the deeper questions of existence.
One of Surya's unique quirks is his choice of media and materials. He uses a range of materials, including oils, watercolors, and mixed media, to create his stunning works. This experimentation with different media and techniques along with his brilliant use of use of light, shade and texture. allows him to bring new dimensions to his art and create something truly unique.
For over four decades, Surya Prakash has been a trailblazer in the art scene in Hyderabad. He has been instrumental in organizing camps and workshops, and his artistic career has been marked by numerous solo and group exhibitions both in India and abroad. Surya Prakash's works have been displayed in various prestigious forums, including the India Triennale and the Paris Biennale. As a jury member and commissioner for national and state-level exhibitions, as well as the fifth India Triennale, Surya Prakash has contributed immensely to the art community in India. He is a recipient of the National Award and gold medals from the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Academy and the Hyderabad Art Society. The All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in New Delhi honored him with the title "Kala Vibhushan." Surya Prakash's paintings have found a place in several museums, corporate houses, banks, institutions, and private and public collections both in India and overseas.
