About H R Das

I began with the thought of Lord Shiva’s vehicle Nandi when I started on this series. I have tried to depict a lot in these paintings. My mythological bull has many poses and many different expressions as well - there are some that look as if they are laughing, some are pensive, others are dominant and full of character. I want the bulls to tell different stories through different avatars. Some of my paintings have religious symbols in the background, like the Swastika, Lotus and Lord Ganesha since I feel the background is like a stage setting in front of which my characters perform, an intricate tapestry to highlight the interactions between the main players of the magnum opus. Some may say that I have taken a common animal and given it a heroic status that it takes on an almost human persona. But one can relate to the beast’s agony, its joy of life, its anger, and one can also fear it.

H.R. Das, born in 1972 in Burdwan, West Bengal, is an artist whose canvases emanate raw vitality. Graduating from the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, he has left an indelible mark on the art world. Solo exhibitions in Mumbai's Bajaj Art Gallery and Art Entrance in 2007 showcased his prowess, complementing numerous group exhibitions, including one at New Delhi's Lalit Kala Akademi and a solo show at Jahangir Art Gallery.

Inspired by Hindu mythology, Das's art revolves around the formidable Bull, particularly Nandi. These bulls are vibrant and commanding, pulsating with character, delivering a palpable sense of strength.

Das's portrayal of village life through cattle is remarkable; they exude vitality, embodying the magnificence of these beasts. His unique style endows them with heroic stature, connecting viewers emotionally. Backgrounds in his art aren't mere backdrops; they create dynamic stages enhancing interactions between the characters.
